Years and decades pass, and the prison drama “The Shawshank Redemption” based on the book by Stephen King “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” remains at the top of the list of the 250 best films in history according to IMDB, the most objective and influential cinematic catalog. This is a great picture directed by Frank Darabont with Tim Robbinson and Morgan Freeman in the lead roles.
Depending on the genre, fans called the leader of the film process the mafia epic, which were the favorites, but since 1994 there is only one leader in the top list of watch movies and it seems that this will continue for a long time – “The Shawshank Redemption” is best of the best”.
Plot of the film
The action of the drama begins in 1947. Bank Manager Andy Dufresne is accused of murdering his wife and her lover. The banker does not admit his guilt (and he is really not guilty), but the harsh court has enough evidence to send the poor man to prison for two life terms, which the prisoner will serve in the sinister Shawshank prison.
The terrified prisoner is introduced to the local mores, fellow prisoners, and prison staff, led by the cynical Director Norton, who disguises himself as a pious and religious man, although he is a cruel tyrant in reality. A hard-working, methodical and very smart prisoner begins to get used to it, and then make an escape plan, which will take him more than twenty years to implement.
King’s original story was published in 1983 in the “Four seasons” collection. Darabont approached the writer with an offer to sell the film rights in 1987, purchasing them for $ 5,000. The author of the original work honestly admitted that he does not see how a hundred-page book will turn into a quality iflix free movie, but the director assured that he knows the correct answer. Although, the task of writing an adapted script was only five years later in 1992. In two months, the script was ready – so, the work on the future masterpiece began. Further other interesting facts about the movie-masterpiece:
- The film was released in the fall of 1994 and, despite universal critical acclaim, failed at the box office, earning a very modest $ 16 million. Reasons : unclear name, lack of female characters, unpopularity of the theme and most importantly-the presence of very cool competitors in the face of stunning projects of Zemeckis and Tarantino – “Forrest Gump” and “Pulp Fiction”, which became the main hits of the summer season.
- However, many awards received, as well as seven Oscar nominations, convinced the producers of the possibility of re-distribution, which brought the box office to a solid amount of $ 60 million. And then the picture sold 320,000 copies, making “The Shawshank Redemption” the most popular movie of the year in the video box office.
- The prison drama was filmed in a real prison in Mansfield, which was closed in 1990. The producers had to spend a substantial part of the budget to bring the run-down penitentiary into proper order. It is currently a museum.
- The success of the film made the director twice more turn to the work of the great master of horror and adapt “The Green Mile” and “Mist” for cinema.
